Why we suspend two weeks warning strike – ASUU, Yobe Varsity

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU) Yobe State University branch has called off the two weeks warning strike it commenced last Monday.

The Branch’s Secretary, Dr. Adam Abubakar made this known in a statement where he indicated that the strike was suspended following agreements reached during a meeting between the ASUU visitation team and government representatives.

The statement also said the chairman of the visitation team briefed the congress on the outcome of their meeting with the government’s representatives where it was explained that the government has already released 50% of N40,066,067.85 as Earned Academic Allowance, (EAA), and pledged to release the remaining 50% by the end of June 2021, as well as the outstanding monthly subvention, approved to cater for the subsequent claims of EAA.

The statement noted that the visitation team identified a communication gap between the University management and the government on the postgraduate study grants and arrears of promoted staff as the government’s representative claimed a request of that nature was never submitted to it.

On implementation of the revised (CONUASS II) table, the team also discovered that the University management was yet to submit the final computation of the differential as earlier requested by the office of the Head of Service.

The congress said given the interventions, it resolved to suspend the warning strike action with immediate effect; to give the government benefit of the doubt on what it claimed lack of knowledge upon.

“That the EAA Adhoc Committee is mandated to compute all other EAA related claims for the 2019/2020 academic session for immediate submission to the management”.
